“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”
Michelangelo, Artist

Keep At It

We have all experienced becoming derailed by distractions. You know what this looks and feels like. You are humming along in the studio, creating art on a regular basis, building momentum and loving the process.

And, then all of a sudden, a distraction rears its ugly head, and just like that, your creativity comes to a grinding halt.

It doesn’t matter what the distraction is, and yet, it has entered your creative life and you have chosen to allow it to do its worst.

We do have a choice wether to allow a distraction to thwart us or not. We could just ignore it, look the other way and keep creating. However, most distractions (with the exception of the phone, snail mail, email, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) are serious and legitimate distractions that require our immediate attention and energy.

So, how do we get back on track after a distraction? We keep creating. We create anyway. We must learn how to create in the middle life. We have to try and remember where we left off, remind ourselves of what we were going to do next to our painting, and tap back into what was interesting and exciting to you about this current painting.

We have to KEEP AT IT! Keep going. Climb back in the saddle.

We must not let distractions go so far as to block our momentum. Momentum is precious and we must protect it at all costs.

Distractions are always going to present themselves. We must create anyway.

Of course, the best defense is to ignore the distraction if possible.

But, if you allow yourself to be distracted, don’t give the distraction any more time and attention than it deserves. And, then, get back to your creativity. And keep at it!

Best,

David
