CLASS DESCRIPTION

Explore contemporary figure drawing, painting and mixed media using graphite, charcoal, pastel, acrylic, and collage. Experiment with different approaches for developing the human form such as realism, expressionism and abstraction. Emphasis is placed on observation, structure, line quality, volume, composition, technique, experimentation, and originality. Discussions, art historical examples, and demonstration are all a part of the curriculum.

Students work from a model and respond and manipulate their chosen mediums to arrive at a dynamic and unique solution. The focus is on the process of creating a drawing, painting or mixed media piece of art.

Students are asked to balance risk-taking and exploration with things that they already know how to do well. Students are encouraged to take their work beyond just making pretty pictures or technically proficient pictures by attempting to produce work that is as fun and interesting for them to create as they are for people to look at.

The goal for a student in my class is to create work that is fresh, vital and alive, as opposed to work that is static or copied. Inherent in each piece is the search for the right line, shape, color, value, texture and edge.

The finished piece will be a record of that journey.

Student furnishes their own supplies and surfaces to work on. A suggested (recommended) supply list will be provided once you are enrolled.
