A Playful Process
OK. So you think you’ve got a great idea. You are even able to visualize what the final product could look like. You feel like it’s time to really focus, become involved in the process and create your vision.
Well, before you do, I have a suggestion: Live with your idea for a bit. Even if it is just in your imagination. Get to know it. Engage in a formative playful period with it. This process should definitely have the feel of play. Try some other ideas on for size just to be sure your original idea is the one worth pursuing. Entertain some variations on your original idea. Ask yourself what it is about your idea that you really like. Also ask what you don’t like about it. Do some sketches or studies if that seems right.
Do not let this process go on too long. You don’t want to ruin your enthusiasm for your idea before you have given it a chance to exist.
Ultimately, you will have to decide on a direction, which may involve trusting your instincts. And you can now begin creating your vision.
However, even after the final form is chosen, keep your options open. Always.
Now is the time to let go of the final product and focus on the process. Focus on the activity. Focus on the actual creating. You have worked with your idea long enough. You know what you want it to look like. You have your path.
Now it is time to play.
