MAKE THINGS AND BREAK THINGS

Still working on my rose studies for the larger 4 foot roses I will be drawing on a larger piece in progress. I just about have my courage ready to go. I will keep you posted. 16”x 12”, graphite, charcoal, acrylic and collage on wood. © 2021 David Limrite

“There are no rules. That is how art is born, how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules. That is what invention is all about.”
Helen Frankenthaler, Artist

Make Things and Break Things

In order to make the kind of art you want to create, you are going to have to make things that don’t work. That don’t measure up. That aren’t successful.

And you have to be willing to do so.

It is nearly impossible to have a vision for a series of paintings, and be successful with every one of them. Especially at the beginning.

Bringing your visions to life requires that you try things. Take risks. Make mistakes. Engage in missteps. And learn what doesn’t work.

I call this Breaking Things.

Breaking things is a necessary component to art making, and to finally getting the results you want. And in order to break things, you have to make things. In fact, you will probably have to make (and break) several things before you are able to realize your vision.

This requires a certain amount of courage, but mostly it requires that you roll up your shirtsleeves and get to work. And work hard. Paint hard. Create hard. And take a lot of risks. And Jump off the cliff. And break things.

Decide to be an artist who makes what she wants to make. And who does whatever it takes to be able to make it.

If that means that you need to break things, then get busy making things.

Best,

David
